As one of the world’s leading carmakers, Volkswagen practically has obligation to be present in all car segments. This includes trucks as well. Therefore, the company offers a model called Amarok for more than eight years. It is present on the market since 2010, so various stories about the redesign in last time seem logical. Although we still haven’t got any official statement from the company, many unofficial reports suggest a complete redesign already in about a year, for the 2020 VW Amarok.
Two kinds of stories are present on the network. Many experts believe that the new model will switch to a unibody platform. On the other side, many suggest cooperation with Ford, so the new Amarok will actually share a lot with the new Ranger. In any case, it looks like the company won’t bother itself with developing a new body-on-frame platform again. Seems like a too big expense at the moment when the company is dealing with all those emission issues.
2020 VW Amarok Redesign
As we already mentioned, there are two kinds of stories about the 2020 VW Amarok redesign that circulate on the network. According to many experts, the new generation will switch to a unibody platform. This makes sense, considering that the Atlas Pickup has been confirmed already. This model will be designed for the U.S. market, just like its SUV sibling that will serve as a basis. Rest of the world will probably keep more familiar Amarok name. Most likely, two truck will be very similar.
Both models will ride on a familiar MQB platform. It won’t be surprised to see the new 2020 VW Amarok with identical shape and dimensions, with just different name, but we are much closer to the scenario in which we are about to see smaller dimensions. Still, this shouldn’t affect capabilities too much. Most likely, the new model would come with the same engines in the offer, with an addition of few oil-burners.
2020 VW Amarok Could be based on the new Ford Ranger?
German carmaker put a lot of effort into creating the original Amarok. Before that, VW didn’t have a platform that would be suitable for a truck, so VW engineers spent a lot of time studying the legendary Hilux. So, it wasn’t surprising that the all-new Amarok came strong in pretty much all aspects. However, it was a pretty devastating process and we are pretty much sure that this company is not willing to do the same will again, at least not at this moment when VW is facing serious emissions issues.
Therefore, many believe that the perfect solution is cooperation with some of the renowned truck makers. From the perspective of most car experts, this would mean a joint venture with Ford. The American manufacturer is working on a new version of Ranger, which will come back to North America. It will come with significant improvements, borrowing plenty of design solution from the legendary, world’s most popular truck, the F-150. Seems like a great opportunity for VW to become more competitive in this segment.
This is just a rumor at the moment, so we can only speculate about how the 2020 VW Amarok would look like in this case. We don’t believe that this would be just a rebadged version. The new model will probably borrow the platform and complete mechanics, while the styling would be the company’s own. In this case, it would mean the company’s latest design language, probably a lot of similarities with the North American Atlas.
2020 VW Amarok Configurations
Body styles and configurations of the 2020 VW Amarok will heavily depend on the new model’s platform. In case of a nobody layout, we are pretty sure that single-row models won’t be in the offer. The reason is very simple. Such design focuses much more on comfort than working capabilities, so a workhorse version doesn’t seem very logical.
On the other side, a classic body-on-frame platform would probably bring various kinds of cab designs, as well as different bed sizes. Also, the trim level organization would go in a much wider range, from classic bare-bone version to well-equipped luxury trims.
2020 VW Amarok Engines
Once again, it depends on a platform a lot. Still, we are pretty sure that VW will use its own engines, even if we see Ford’s design. Two familiar units from the Atlas will definitely find the place under the hood of 2020 VW Amarok.
Base models should feature a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine with around 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
A large 3.6-liter V6 seems certain as well. This one delivers 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Considering that the new truck will be sold worldwide, count on (in)famous TDI engines as well.
2020 VW Amarok Release Date and Price
Despite the potential redesign, we don’t expect that the 2020 VW Amarok will come before the last quarter of next year. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 25.000 dollars.
