Being a leading truckmaker in the full-size segment, and not having a mid-size model is somehow strange. The FCA is considering to fill this spot for a while, and now it seems we have a solution in a foreseeable future. With the return of the Ford Ranger, the situation is clear – companies are expecting more from this segment. That is why the 2020 Dodge Dakota is not a rumor only anymore.
The new truck will take the empty position in the mid-size truck segment. Ram 1500 will get a little brother. But actually, other pickups will serve as the base for the 2020 Dodge Dakota. It is Fiat Fullback. The pickup truck is available outside the US as a very successful model. But, the Fiat is not as famous as Dakota in North America. What’s more, the company could bring it in various configurations, including a diesel engine. Again, Fullback has one, but that drivetrain can’t meet the demands of US customers. On the other hand, European Wrangler is using a powertrain that could be available soon in the US.
2020 Dodge Dakota Comeback and Competition
Definitely, FCA needs a compact truck. They are now a big threat to Ford and General Motors both in full-size and heavy-duty segments. But, the truck maker is not offering a mid-size model. Well, Ford was without such pickup for a while. But eventually, the blue Oval company decided to bring back the Ranger. Other rivals to the upcoming 2020 Dodge Dakota will be Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. First two are also well-known for their off-road variants. So, that will be one more task for engineers in FCA. The 2020 Dakota must perform great to set the challenge to other trucks, and some big SUVs with great towing capability.
2020 Dodge Dakota Engine, Diesel
Under the hood of the 2020 Dodge Dakota, we will find a Pentastar engine. Experts are sure that the company is about to install a 3.6-liter V6 unit as the main source of power. Well, a four-cylinder engine could be the base variant. But, not too many buyers are choosing weaker drivetrains. So, engineers will focus on V6. This unit is going to offer 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Also, it is pretty efficient with 21 mpg combined for 2WD. In four-wheel drive mode, the fuel economy drops to 20 mpg. The company will offer this engine in combination with automatic transmission.
A four-pot solution will be a 2.4-liter engine with an output of 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. This is a less potent option, but much more fuel friendly. Also, the towing capacity of the 2020 Dodge Dakota with such drivetrain will drop to 2,000 pounds, so not too many truckers will consider it for buying.
A diesel engine will be a 2.2-liter turbo unit. It is a Euro specs motor for Jeep Wrangler. It is just a matter of time when we will see this mill overseas. The new MultiJet turbodiesel engine is capable to produce 200 hp. It will make it more potent than Chevy Colorado Diesel and the upcoming D-D4 for Toyota Tacoma. It also creates 330 lb-ft of torque. Various drive systems are also available for this drivetrains, and the 2020 Dodge Dakota Diesel will definitely borrow some of them from the Wrangler.
All these drivetrains will make the 2020 Dodge Dakota a serious competitor to abovementioned trucks. Towing capacity will depend on setup, and 2,000 pounds offered by four-cylinder drivetrain are a joke compared to other engines. For other vehicles, a V6 offers more than 6,000 pounds of towing capacity. With a diesel engine, the capability will probably match, or be close to Chevy Colorado’s towing ability. Currently, this is the most potent truck in the segment with 7,700 pounds. The 2020 Dakota Diesel will offer at least 7,500 lbs.
2020 Dodge Dakota – Rebadged Fiat Fullback
It is not happening for the first time to see two almost the same vehicles with different names in the US and in the rest of the world. Fiat Fullback is popular in South America and Europe. However, Dodge Ram badge is something that buyers in the United States would like to see. And the FCA will deliver it. Well, the 2020 Dakota will be almost the same as the Fiat Fullback. Minor exterior modifications, including badging, will give it a fresh look.
On the other hand, the interior is getting much more features. As for every model by FCA, buyers will get many trim levels and other options, with numerous configurations available to build. We will probably find many similarities between 2020 Dakota and Dodge Durango SUV. The Uconnect infotainment system will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services. Navigation will come with upper trim levels or as an extra option. The cab configuration and bed size are unknown yet. But, be sure there will be both single and double cabs, as well as two lengths of the bed.
