General Motors is trying to catch up with Ford off-road truck segment. Currently, the F-150 Raptor is number 1 pickup in this segment, without any doubt. Well, for most buyers, it is the most impressive unit in F-150 lineup. So, there is no doubt why other companies are trying to step into this market. The 2020 Chevy Reaper will finally enter production to battle Raptor. Chevrolet and GM need this model to stay competitive, especially with other companies also planning refreshments of their lineups. Besides hybrid trucks, an off-road class is the most interesting.
The concept was presented in 2014, and ever since fans of the Silverado are waiting eagerly for a chance to purchase Raptor’s rival. It is about to happen soon. Spy shots are giving us most hopes this is happening. Recently launched Silverado 1500 appears beefed up under the heavy camo. All experts are united that the company develops an off-road truck. It is just a matter of fact when it will be available.
Another big question is the name. While we would like to see it as 2020 Chevy Reaper or Silverado Reaper, it is also possible for a truck to appear as ZR2 model for the existing lineup. All in all, this move guarantees fun in the off-road segment. Chevrolet is already supreme in compact class with Colorado ZR2. Well, in this case, Ford needs to respond with Raptor version of Ranger pickup. So, the rivalry continues through all truck classes and segments.
2020 Chevy Reaper Spy Photos
Recently, we had a chance to see the new Silverado on roads. The test mule carried a lot of camouflage. However, it was obvious that the prototype is upgraded. Soon, experts and fans started to analyze available spy photos and they concluded it could be an off-road pickup, a rival to Ford F-150 Raptor. Other details are still unknown. Rumors are offering some possibilities and expectations for drivetrain and engine room, as well as the release date. However, the 2020 Chevy Reaper is the only speculation so far. But, soon we will find out more about it.
General Motors bosses could opt for a Silverado ZR2 name. This is a familiar trim from a mid-size / compact segment. Truckers already know what Colorado ZR2 can do and its advantages. So, the company could carry over the popularity of the trim level to the bigger segment. On the other hand, five years ago when Reaper appeared for the first time, everyone saw it as a respectable opponent to the king of the class. The tough decision is ahead of the company’s board.
2020 Chevy Reaper Rivals
We all know which truck is the one to catch up with it. Abovementioned Ford F-150 Raptor is still waiting for a challenge. It might set the bar too high for the competition. We already have few off-road oriented pickups, but these are not serious rivals to Ford’s vehicle. GM recently added off-road features to Sierra 1500 with AT4 package. It drew attention. Also, it might announce the same, but a more serious move for Chevy – the Reaper’s arrival.
Well, Toyota is the major rival in the mid-size segment, Besides Tacoma, Tundra also uses a TRD Pro package with special shocks and suspension upgrades. Nissan Titan Warrior is a concept we expect to see very soon. But, the most intriguing rumors are coming from FCA. The company gave us few hints about its performance-tuned, off-road-oriented truck – Ram Rebel TRX. If rumors come true, this is going to be one of the most powerful models in the market with a Hellcat engine that produces 707 hp. Well, some lighter version will be a competitor with performance and the price.
2020 Chevy Reaper Engines, Specs
The 2020 Chevy Reaper will use one of the existing drivetrains Silverado 1500 is using. Well, 5.3 or 6.2 mills are the most likely choices. The first one can’t match Raptor’s 450 hp and 510 lb-ft outputs. It is good for 355 hp and 383 pound-feet. So, a bigger engine remains a more serious option for the Reaper. In this case, the truck will gain 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. It still leaves some space for upgrades. Engineers could turbocharge it to create more power. With 500 hp it will definitely put some challenge ahead of the next F-150 Raptor. A 10-speed automatic transmission and dynamic fuel management are the latest additions, so these will definitely be parts of 2020 Reaper.
Let’s not forget the diesel engine that will be soon part of Silverado’s lineup. This drivetrain waits for EPA tests to become available. But, if GM wasn’t sure, they wouldn’t enter this process. A 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel is more powerful than Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 can do. With 282 horsepower, it is 40 and 30 ponies more than its rivals. The torque output of all three models is the same – 450 lb-ft. This engine is excellent for off-road adventures, and we can take it as the possible drivetrain for 2020 Chevy Reaper.
2020 Chevy Reaper Features
The truck will also get new shocks and suspensions. Back in 2014, the Reaper concept carried Fox shocks. These are the same as the ones Ford Raptor is using. But, Fox is making the best parts in this segment. To challenge the class leader, the 2020 Chevy Reaper must use only high-end products. There are also special upgrades for springs and suspensions, so the truck can go over various obstacles. This model will offer more ground clearance as well, so drivers don’t have to worry about big rocks and bumps.
Underbody protection includes skid plates and all-terrain tires. New exhaust tips will help Reaper improve fuel economy, but the pickup is not going to be too generous with gas mileage. GM will use the new MultiPro tailgate. New functions are possible. Currently, the gate could be set at six positions to serve as a step, working station, bed extension… Interior of this pickup will be a mix of sport and utility. A lot of accents and details will show this is a unique model.
