The facelift of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado will be the last big changes before the truck enters the new generation. General Motors announced that fans of the mid-size pickup will see more changes in 2022. Then, Colorado, and its GMC twin, Canyon, will debut as the next-gen models. By then, we will see some updates and changes that are a test for 2022.
The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is the best truck in its class in the USA. It can tow the most with the diesel Duramax engine. It is also very versatile, offering petrol engine as well. High-end models are almost luxurious (not like GMC Canyon Denali). On the other hand, the 2020 Colorado ZR2 is going to be the dominant off the road.
For the 2020 edition, we will see small updates. Probably the most relevant could be the new grille. Yes, Chevy is replacing the bow tie with a CHEVROLET sign. That will also change other things up front, including headlights and bumpers. Inside, minor modifications and updates of the infotainment system will make the truck fresh again.
New Challenge – Ford Ranger
The new 2020 Chevrolet Colorado can’t count it will be supreme again over its competition. Recently, Toyota Tacoma launched a new version of its TRD Pro model. Now, it is a tight race between it and Colorado ZR2 when we compare off-road skills of these two. The Japanese truck is also to get a diesel engine any time soon.
But, the 2020 Chevy Colorado will face more competition from the new Ford Ranger. The pickup is back to the USA, and we will see what options it will present in 2020. Some of the first updates could be a diesel engine, hybrid drivetrain, but more likely Raptor version with a V6 petrol engine.
2020 Chevy Colorado Specs
The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado will continue to use a four-pot engine as the main source of power. This 2.5-liter unit can produce 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. However, it is used just for the base configuration, while most truckers are opting for a V6 powertrain. It is not consuming much more fuel. With a two-wheel drive configuration, the truck can achieve 20/25 mpg. A four-cylinder returns 21/26 mpg.
On the other hand, a 3.6-liter V6 engine bursts 105 ponies more than the smaller unit. Also, add 85 more pound-feet for a twist. That will make the 2020 Colorado very capable for towing. A V6 can pull up to 7,000 pounds, as twice as four-cylinder.
2020 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel
However, if you want to squeeze every pound from your truck’s towing capacity, then the diesel engine will do it. A 2.8-liter turbo-four Duramax unit raises the bar to 7,700 pounds. That is the record no other truck in mid-size class can beat. The engine produces 185 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque. At the same time, it returns the best fuel economy numbers. In urban areas, diesel is not so efficient as on the highway, where it can make 30 mpg.
Off-Road 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2
Well, the new 2020 Chevrolet Colorado will also offer a Z71 as an off-road truck. But, top of the class belongs to the ZR2. This badge could soon make the Silverado a rival to Ford F-150 Ranger. The new package will include features from Z71 and upgrade them with even meaner equipment. Here, we will find some unique appearance details. Leather seats are standard for 2020 Chevy Colorado ZR2. Hood, grille and rear bumper are unique. You won’t find these parts elsewhere in the GM offer.
However, the main upgrades are for the drivetrain. An off-road package includes special suspension and damping DSSV system. The truck also stands higher than its stablemates. Huger ground clearance allows the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado to move across rocky terrains and bumpy roads. Bed-liner is standard. The ZR2 truck is using only a V6 or diesel engine. However, this version consumes much more fuel. For V6 average drops from 20 mpg to 17 mpg. With diesel, combined fuel economy is 20 mpg. However, that is much worse than 23 mpg the standard vehicle can do. Of course, the Colorado ZR2 is using only a 4WD.
2020 Chevrolet Colorado Price
The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado will be available late in 2019. The price depends on the configuration. The cheapest solution costs below $24,000. However, we already said it is not the too popular 4-cylinder engine. So, the real deal starts with a V6 engine. But, the cheapest configuration will be Long Box and Extended Cab WT trim, and it costs $4,000 more than the base configuration. A Z71 off-road truck is available with a 4-cylinder engine. Its price is around $31,000.
The most expensive model is going to be 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. This configuration will start at $43,000 for the petrol version. If you upgrade the ride with a diesel, it will cost you $2,500 more. Of course, there are various additional packages that will make the new pickup’s price go over $50,000.
